Global Standards Organization

Established by HRMI, the Global Standards Organization (GSO) acts as the sole member, to carry out work related to provide the research and technology development needed to maintain the technical relevance of codes and standards in Business Management.

GSO is a standards body, or standards development organization, whose primary activities are developing, coordinating, promulgating, revising, amending, reissuing, interpreting, or otherwise maintaining standards that address the interests of a wide base of users outside the standards development organization.

Global standards are crucial to the HR and Business professions because they ensure a basic HR and Business framework is applied consistently worldwide. GSO standards have helped establish the GSO as the premier authority in HR and Business, helping it mature into the global organization today.

It is the mission of the
GSO to improve the understanding and competency of HR and Business practitioners worldwide by identifying, defining, documenting and championing generally accepted business practices and a common business management lexicon. Through the Global Standards, GSO works to develop standards for the profession that are valued by our members, the marketplace and other stakeholders. By doing this, GSO hopes to achieve worldwide excellence in the practice of Business Management through standards that are widely recognized and consistently applied.

Generally, any given standards organization can be classified by its role, position and the extent of its influence on the local, national, regional and global standardization arena. By geographic designation, there are international, regional, and national standards bodies (the latter often referred to as NSBs). By technology or industry designation, there are standards developing organizations (SDOs) and also standards setting organizations (SSOs) also known as consortia. Standards organizations may be governmental, quasi-governmental or non-governmental entities. Quasi- and non-governmental standards organizations are often non-profit organizations.

Most voluntary standards are offered for use by people, regulators, or industry. When a published standard achieves widespread acceptance and dominance it can become a broader de facto standard for an industry.
